I started the centerpiece wanting a kind of landscape using different colors of fat quarters. After satin stitching all of the pieces together, I used some blue and purple silk flowers to make butterflies. I machine sewed them on, then beaded their bodies using upholstery thread. Afterwards I used a metallic silver to sew on the antannae.

The flowers were made with scraps of purple and then yellow in the center. I machine sewed them on and then sewed the buttons on with upholstery thread. That stuff lasts forever. The leaf and stem were free motion stitched.

I decided to branch out with my fabric dyeing and use some yellow. I did a couple of yellow dye baths and then the last one I added a tiny bit of red so that it would be a darker shade. The center purple was created by purple and green dye baths and a celtic knot was outlined on with metallic green thread.

The border was created using red and yellow dyes. The back-piece was several dyes of blue and one last one of yellow. The mixture of the two colors created a bright green with some yellow highlights.
