Ever since I began makign art quilts I've liked the effect of a cross-section of a scene. This one originally started out from a photograph of a light house that I sketched out in india ink and then added to it for a full quilt. I had to practice taking out a lot of the light house detail so that it would fit the quilt better but this picture is the final design:

This was drawn onto the fabric with colored pencils which are not water soluable. After getting frustrated with painting over my own lines I went out and bought some dress maker pencils so I don't have this problem again. When painting from a sketch I usually only draw in the large features and then figure out the detail on my own. I always have several photographs or designs I look at while painting.

This is the background and the foreground painted and drying. The sky and water were painted very wet on wet. The clouds were wet on dry.

I wasn't quite sure how the best way to paint the pieces was. I actually didn't start out with one big square of fabric but instead all of them seperate because I wanted it to not quite match up.
